If you have a chance, I recommend listening to Terry Gross’ compilation show that aired last night on Fresh Air. The portion from a September 2011 interview, her last with Sendak, was particularly interesting, insightful, and moving. A man recognizing that he is near the end of his life with an interviewer he trusted and loved. Awesome.
I used to sing all 12 months to my kids at bedtime and I’ve taken liberties with Carole King’s real tune because, frankly, I don’t know it well. You can find whole versions of it, sung by her, on youtube.
Ashes to Ashes, Maurice Sendak, You Wild Thing!
Love your musical homage, twinkly! RIP, Mr. Sendak. You will be missed. Chicken Soup With Rice and A Hole Is to Dig were among my all-time favorite stories when I was a kid.
Love is a strong word, but thanks for saying so. It’s so goofy doing these videos, I like it, I don’t like it, I do it anyway. An exercise in fun, futility, frivolousness, singing songs I can’t find anywhere else, and vanity.
A Hole is to Dig is one of the oldest books I have from my childhood, but it’s currently MIA. Where is it? DANG. I love that book. Ruth Krauss rocks. I think we even have a second copy but I can’t find it. I looked through so many bookshelves last night to no avail.
That was patently adorable.
oh, I do so love your comment, Erin. As I always say, you paved the way. If it weren’t for your abundant video posts, I am not sure I would be brave enough to do my own. It is fun and a good practice in humility. I have to REALLY strongly resist the urge to fuss at how I look and sound. Mind you, I don’t use videos in which I look completely hideous and ridiculous, but it is just me up there. I could put on make up and a cape, I could warm up my voice, but fuck it.
I think I know, but I’m going to ask anyway: how did you get so brave?
